On completion of my degree at NCAD, I was selected from graduates across the country to exhibit in the Graduate Showcase at the RDS Knitting and Stitching Show 2013. The showcase was funded by the embroider’s guild and consisted of a dedicated space at the show to exhibit my work.

For the exhibition I wanted to explore the character of the owl whose secretive and nocturnal nature intrigued me. The final piece combines paint and stitch on cotton calico fabric to depict a trio of owls in the woods at night. The piece gives the impression that the owls have been interrupted, and have turned simultaneously to greet the intruding viewer, wide-eyed and curious. The resulting wall hanging was hung by interleaving a simple wooden dowel between the trunks of the trees in the piece with the intention of integrating the display into the piece and enhancing the sense of immersion in the scene.
